National Geographic Magazine: "The Truth About Tongass"

The July, 2007 issue of National Geographic Magazine hit the streets with a hard-hitting article of the Tongass National Forest, featuring Sitka Conservation Society's Groundtruthing Project. As part of their expose of land management on the Tongass, National Geographic highlighted two projects undertaken by conservation groups to inform Tongass management -- the Audubon Society and Nature Conservancy's Conservation Area Design mapping project, and SCS's Groundtruthing Project.

The entire article is available at the National Geographic website and includes a multimedia slideshow titled Saving Tongass.

Tongass Clearinghouse provides a Southeast Alaska Directory to and for communities and people in the Tongass National Forest.

The Tongass National Forest, managed by the U.S. Forest Service, was created in 1907 by Teddy Roosevelt. It is America's largest national forest (17 million acres, or 500 miles north to south, or 80% of Southeast Alaska) and the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world.

The Alexander Archipelago of Southeast Alaska is the home of over 85,000 people living in over 37 communities, which are scattered around this vast wilderness area. The terrain ranges from sea to mountain-top glaciers, includes over 1000 islands and a long, narrow strip of mainland, and supports a rich array of fauna and flora, including ancient stands of old-growth forests.

If you aren't fortunate enough to live here, the photographs will help you see and feel Southeast Alaska, including Baranof and Kuiu Islands and Sitka. Many more photos of Southeast Alaska by artist and photographer Mim McConnell can be viewed and purchased at Mim's Gallery. Buy and help support this website!
